I'm so excited you are doing this! I am a past AFI supporter and have followed these lists since the first one came out in 1998. Here's some background: As 1998 marked the centennial of the first film, the American Film Institute (AFI) compiled a list they titled "100 Year ... 100 Movies". They had industry leaders (directors, screenwriters, actors, critics, historians, etc.) each select 100 movies from a ballot that listed 400 movies. The results were released at AFI's website, and a three-hour program was produced for presentation on TV. They have compiled a new list every year since (except I haven't seen anything for 2009), showcasing different genres and categories, including musicals, film scores, movie quotes, stars, and songs. The list you have here is the 10th anniversary list from 2007, which includes movies released after 1996 that were not eligible for the first list.
ReplyDeleteAFI also presents a Lifetime Achievement Award to an actor, actress, or director every year, and that is also televised.
Hope someone finds this post interesting.
Notes on a couple other movies listed with a "R" rating above: The MPAA rating system was not in place yet in 1960, so "Psycho" did not receive an MPAA rating. The suggested rating is PG-13. I'm not sure where the R rating came from, although the remake in 1998 is rated R. It's certainly not a movie children should see, because of the content, but it is not as violent as "The Godfather". Most of the violence is left to the viewer's imagination.
ReplyDeleteThere originally was no rating for "The Graduate". It was labeled in 1972 as PG for sexual content, language, and mild violence. This is basically a comedy. Again, not a movie I would want children to see, but I don't know where the "R" rating came from. It's not one of my favorite films, but neither is "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" If you don't want to watch "The Graduate", I would suggest "To Sir, With Love" from the same year.
I applaud your choice of "The Conversation" instead of "Chinatown". I absolutely love that film, though it is a bit cerebral.
Lastly, to go back to the selection of 1983's "The Right Stuff" to replace 1980's "Raging Bull": I noticed there are no other 1980 films on the complete list, and there are no 1983 films on the list, so I guess there's nothing to challenge, there. However, one of my favorite movies from 1980 is "The Elephant Man", which is also based on the life of a real person, but tells a much more inspiring, heartwarming story.
